Canadian Tire Corporation is a household name in Canada, being part of communities from coast-to coast for over ninety years. We provide products and services for homes, automobiles, outdoors, sports and more reflecting our diverse customer base. With over 490 retail locations and a robust online community we provide unmatched products and services to our customers.
Canadian Tire is facing the challenge of aging communications equipment in their stores, needing to evolve to meet the modern day needs of the retail environment. Mobility is a key driver for change. The implementation of SIP-based Wi-Fi phones was fundamental to improved productivity within the store.
The Scarborough Canadian Tire had an aging Nortel key system. As with most retail environments, budgets are very tight and we needed to squeeze the absolute most out of a limited budget and repurpose equipment where possible.
With the E-MetroTel UCx unified solution recommended by our trusted partner Braitech ICT Solutions, we could retain all our Nortel digital phones and avoid having to re-cable the entire store in the process. In addition, the solution included all the new capabilities of the latest technology such as voicemail to email, call routing options for various ring groups as well as follow me calling and remote phones just to name a few.
Because the E-MetroTel UCx carries forward the features of the Nortel key systems, we had minimal retraining requirements of our staff which was extremely beneficial considering our large part time group of employees.
The absolute best part of the E-MetroTel UCx solution was that we didn’t have to dispose of any of the solid reliable Nortel phones which resulted in huge cost savings.
The partnership between Braitech ICT Solutions and Alpha Telecom is a unique combination of skills and talent providing top notch services and tech support to our team. The secure remote access to my UCx means fast and effective support always.

“Ranked #7 on the list of cities with populations between 75,000 and 124,999 in the 2015 Digital Cities Survey, the City of Columbia’s information technology department was recognized as a leader in the use of innovative technology to improve services, security, transparency and citizen engagement. This leadership commitment required us to replace an outdated Nortel CS 1000 PBX that was costly to maintain and support with a simple, secure and feature-rich Unified Communications solution from E-MetroTel. The transition was smooth and seamless, installing a new UCX1000 appliance server that delivered the features we needed to improve services and boost efficiencies.
The UCX1000 came fully loaded with a rich suite of ready-to-use UC applications including find-me follow-me mobility, Android smartphone client, unified messaging, voice and video conferencing, remote office calling, call recording and reporting, contact center, IVR and more. Its evergreen design supports a mix of Nortel digital and VoIP phones as well as new SIP phones, helping the City of Columbia realize significant cost savings, in the order of 30%. We now have a reliable, scalable communications system that simplifies our IT network and helps increase staff productivity.“ Jim Chapdelaine, CIO, City of Columbia, Missouri.

|"Toys R Us was in need of an overhaul to the aging Nortel voice systems. We replaced our CS1000 at head office with the feature-rich and economical UCx1000 Unified Communication system and with UCx50 systems at our stores across the country. Using the built-in Scheduled Announcement application we have streamlined activities in our warehouse and the E-MetroTel WiFi SIP phones help keep Toys R Us staff in constant communication while serving customers throughout the stores. We are very impressed with how reliable and easy the UCx solution is to operate and intend to have all remaining stores operating on the UCx before long. Best of all, the latest UC applications help improve the customer shopping experience and increase employee productivity while cutting our communication costs in half.“ Vito Lollino, Mgr Information Services, Toys R Us Canada.|
The Town of St. Marys, hom to approximately 7,000 residents, is one of Ontario's oldest and most appealing communities, offering a unique rural lifestyle with urban amenities. Residents enjoy a high quality of life and an affordable cost of living. The community offers new and seasoned homeowners a variety of reasonably priced housing options, from new builds in subdivisions to historic homes in established neighbourhoods. As a separated town, St. Marys' complement of municipal services rivals those offered in many larger centres.
To maintain its outstanding service level, The Town was needed to replace its soon to be unsupported Phone Switches, the BCM 450 and BCM 50’s. Upon initial installation of these systems over 8 years ago, The Town was one of the first in Southern Ontario to implement a multi‐site design with the BCM’s utilizing a mixture of Digital and IP sets.
There were a number of challenges with the old system:
The UCX450 was appealing to the Town for a variety of reasons:
The Town implemented the UCX450 in the spring of 2016 with the help of Alpha Telecom Services Inc. The cutover was a great success, and the system was preconfigured which allowed for minimal down time. Alpha Telecom ironed out any issues that arose with ease and met all of the Town’s needs. Training happened during the cutover allowing myself to make necessary changes as we brought all the sets online. Since the cut‐over I have activated 10+ sets, and reconfigured portions of the call routing, all without a support call. I am very happy with the UCX and I am excited to implement more of its features that we never had with the BCM in the near future.

“Regrouping 31 schools, 15,000 students and 2,300 administrative, teaching and support personnel in the state of Oklahoma, the Lawton Public School (LPS) District’s legacy phone systems are quite outdated, complex to manage and costly to maintain and operate. To help address these challenges, LPS decided to migrate all of their old landline-based phone systems to a next-generation internet-based system.
The E-MetroTel UCx VOIP solution was selected for its simple, cost-effective yet flexible and feature-rich architecture that consolidates all of the different phone systems into a single, centralized server platform without having to incur the high cost of immediately replacing hundreds of existing digital and analog phones. Technology partner Vic Telecommunications installed a high availability UCx1000E server in our central administration office that is networked using SIP trunks to survivable UCx20 servers in each of the schools, ensuring parents and personnel alike always have open lines of communication.
Everyone working at LPS will benefit from having access to the same new features and applications across the entire school district including call transfer, call recording, conferencing, unified messaging, voice-mail to text, notifier and scheduled announcement. We are expecting annual savings of $60,000 and are eager to have all our remaining schools transferred over to the UCx from E-MetroTel.“ Zeldon D. Rice, Director Information Technology, Lawton Public Schools.

|“Our long-term strategy is to modernize our IT infrastructure to make the University of Puerto Rico a showcase for Unified Communications and a model for other institutions in Puerto Rico. With the E-MetroTel UCx1000 system, we were easily able to migrate to an open SIP-based platform that simplifies our IT network and significantly reduces our operating costs by migrating our Nortel Meridian 1 PBXs. The users continue using their phones - digital, IP and analog - but now get the benefits of integrated UC productivity tools including Unified Messaging, Conferencing and Smartphone client solution. We are very pleased with the performance of the UCX solution." Víctor Díaz, Director, Office of Information Systems, University of Puerto Rico, Central Administration.|
“As a transportation and warehousing service provider since 1969, The Rosedale Group is a privately-held, family-owned Canadian company that has grown to 14 terminals with a fleet of 50 straight trucks, 500 tractors and 1400 trailers that are operated and supported by over 800 employees. Our proud history of continuously improving our people resources, equipment, terminal network and technology has enabled us to deliver effective transportation, warehouse management, logistics, tracking and billing services for our customers. When the time came to replace our aging Nortel PBX communications system, we turned to technology partner EvergreenTel to install a next-generation platform that would be simple to use, provided the features and flexibility we were looking for and was expandable as we continue to grow our operations.
Rolling-out the E-MetroTel UCx platform proved to be the ideal choice, helping us move to a single, scalable centralized SIP-based Unified Communications server platform that replaces our Norstar and BCM systems in regional offices as well as a CS 1000 in our head office supporting a large Symposium call center. With the migration to UCx, we have been able to retain the existing functionality while adding new applications such as follow-me mobility, remote office calling, unified messaging, voice conferencing, call recording and IVR, call center reporting and agent wallboard. No other solution could deliver the same functionality. Centrally managing the UCx over SIP trunks and retaining our Nortel digital and IP phones has significantly reduced our communications total cost of ownership. We are delighted with the roll-out and already planning the migration of more locations with intent to deploy UCx to all sites in North America.” Mike Hembruff, Director, Information Technology, The Rosedale Group.
“With 9 major hospital campuses, over 20 urgent care centers and 100+ physician offices in the state of Florida, Florida Hospital’s communication network is large and complex. When it was time to replace some of our end of life telephone systems, we tried other solutions but were disappointed with the fewer phone features and cost of the systems.
By deploying the E-MetroTel UCx solution, we have been able to keep the many different models of telephones we have throughout the enterprise and have obtained additional features that are already loaded within the UCx application. We are deploying more and more UCx systems throughout our enterprise and we have been very impressed with how smooth the transition has been (which has been seamless to our customers), and have found it to be the most cost- effective option. We are extremely satisfied with the UCx solution“. L. Taylor, Telecom Manager, Florida Hospital.
“As a member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution serving the greater Nashville Tennessee and surrounding counties since 1949, US Community Credit Union (USCCU) offers its members lower rate loans, higher dividends on savings and investments, and fewer fees, supported by trusted, knowledgeable staff and outstanding member services. Proud to be named one of the "Top 200 Healthiest Credit Unions in America" with a ranking of #110 out of 6,655 credit unions, our dedication to delivering the best products and services for our members required us to replace our aging Nortel phone system with a communications solution that would be secure and reliable, feature-rich, yet simple to manage and economical to operate. With the help of partner UCI direct, USCCU successfully replaced our BCM telephone system with a state of the art UCx system from E-MetroTel. The transition was seamless, the functionality was greatly improved, and costs became much more controllable.
With a single license, all of the features and applications we need such as call recording, call accounting, contact center, call agents, unified messaging, and extension to mobile come came built-in with every UCx server, regardless whether located at our main Nashville location or in surrounding branches, helping us significantly simplify our network and lower our operating costs. Eliminating the separate licensing and support for 3 third party applications and servers, combined with the ability to retain our existing Nortel 1140 IP phones, means huge savings for our members, in the order of 50% of our communication costs. We have been very satisfied with the service from E-MetroTel as well as the functionality of the UCx. US Community Credit Union has found E-MetroTel to be a key business partner in the success of our overall business strategy.” Paul Johnson, President/CEO, US Community Credit Union.”
