Nortel M1/CS1000 Digital and Analog Phones

In order to use Nortel Aries and Taurus (M3900) digital phones with UCx Server, the phones must be connected to a UCx Media Gateway or the UCx DSM16P card.

Configure UCx Media Gateway with Digital Phones

The MGC can be configured to communicate with a specific UCx Server, using its command line configuration utility (see MG - Media Gateway Configuration for details).

Digital phones can be configured on UCx by means of Set Based Configuration. The  feature provides the ability to associate physical Nortel phones with UCx extensions. A set can be connected and through a simple menu driven procedure (using the sets display and keypad) the user can finish the configuration of the set. See MG - Phone Configuration for details.

Configure UCx DSM16P card with Digital Phones

The UCx DSM16P card can be configured to communicate with a specific UCx Server using its Web-based Configuration Utility. This UCx Server configuration applies to all Nortel digital phones connected to the UCx DSM16P.

Step One: Configure DSM16P to communicate with UCx Server

To specify the UCx Server to which UCx DSM16P is connected, perform the following steps:

  1. From your Internet browser, enter the IP address of the UCx DSM16P (See DSM16 - Web-based Configuration Utility) to open the UCx DSM16's Web-based Configuration Utility.
  2. From the Gateway tab, select Call Server
  3. In the Primary Server IP field, enter the IP address of the UCx Server
  4. If the UCx Server does not use the default port number for Nortel phones (7000), enter the port number in the Primary Server Port field
  5. Press the Save Changes button to update the configuration of the UCx DSM16P

Please refer to the DSM16 - Gateway Configuration for more information on the configuration of other parameters.

Step Two: Connect phones to the DSM16P

Refer to the DSM16 - Wiring Chart for wiring information on the RJ-21 telephony connector. You can connect 16 Nortel digital telephones to the RJ-21 telephony connector on the system's main unit.

Note:
The Aries phones (M2600 series) are wiring polarity sensitive, ensure tip (green) must be positive relative to ring (red).
The M1 Taurus (M3900 series) phones are not polarity sensitive, so the wiring polarity does not matter.

Step Three: Configure the phones

Refer to the Device Configuration page for details on configuring the options for Nortel digital phones connected to the DSM16P.

To configure the phone on the UCx Server, follow the instructions for Adding an XSTIM Extension.
